Smoke and Heat Exhaust Systems (SHE): Saving Lives in the Event of a Fire

An efficient smoke and heat exhaust system (RWA) is a central component of every fire protection concept—and is required by law. In the event of a fire, it reliably vents dangerous smoke gases and heat to the outside via the roof, facade, or ventilation ducts, thereby ensuring clear escape routes and safe rescue conditions.

With INDU LIGHT’s smoke and heat exhaust systems, you can rely on tested safety, precise technology, and reliable performance—which can save lives in an emergency.

FAQ

RWA stands for smoke and heat exhaust system. An RWA system is an essential component of a fire protection concept and can save lives in the event of a fire. RWA systems can be categorized into natural (NRA) and mechanical (MRA) smoke exhaust systems.

NRA stands for natural smoke exhaust system. Unlike an MRA (mechanical smoke exhaust system), an NRA system operates on the principle of thermal convection.

An NRWG refers to a natural smoke and heat exhaust unit, such as our Libra skylight dome.

MRA stands for mechanical smoke exhaust system. This smoke and heat exhaust system is motor-driven.

A natural smoke exhaust system (NRA) is one whose operation is based on the principle of thermal convection. Smoke and heat exhaust systems (RWA) whose operation relies on motor-driven components such as fans are referred to as mechanical smoke exhaust systems (MRA).

According to state building codes, stairwells must be equipped with a smoke exhaust opening. This ensures that escape and rescue routes remain smoke-free. To achieve smoke extraction, appropriate measures must be taken. State building codes require a geometric smoke exhaust area of at least 1 m²—or at least 5% of the stairwell’s floor area.

Mechanical smoke exhaust systems are used whenever the required smoke discharge or exhaust rates cannot be achieved by natural smoke exhaust systems. This may be due to cramped structural conditions or reduced effectiveness caused by wind.

Awards are nice—but what really matters is the reliability of our products. In the event of a fire, human lives are at stake: skylights must open automatically to keep escape routes free of smoke. That is why INDU LIGHT prioritizes technical precision, regular audits, and independent certifications.
