Wafios, Reutlingen
Energy-Efficient Building Standards in Historic Industrial Buildings
On the outskirts of Reutlingen, just below the Achalm, stands an architectural testament to industrial modernism. More than 100 years ago, Wafios AG developed the first machines for wire and tube processing here. The former founder’s hall is now part of a forward-looking e-mobility campus. Here, innovative solutions are being developed for bending electrical conductors used in electric vehicles. After years of disuse, the building underwent extensive revitalization—more than 1,200 square meters of modern office and production space have been created, breathing new life into the site.

INDU LIGHT sets accents
Due to urbanization and increasing land sealing, industrial sites are no longer as readily available as they once were. Instead of new construction, many owners are once again focusing on the renovation and conversion of existing buildings—whether to reduce operating costs, meet current regulations, or invest in long-term value preservation.
The modernized founder’s hall at WAFIOS AG in Reutlingen demonstrates how historically developed industrial architecture can be combined with today’s requirements for comfort, energy efficiency, and occupational safety.
Glare-free natural daylight
A key element of the renovation was the replacement of the over 36-meter-long continuous rooflight. The aging rooflight, made of armoured glass, no longer met current standards for safety, energy efficiency, and brightness.
The solution: the adaptable Glasline mullion-transom system from INDU LIGHT. Equipped with solar control glazing, the continuous rooflight meets several architecturally and functionally demanding requirements at once. Depending on the configuration, Glasline can even be used for buildings meeting the Passive House standard. In this project, INDU LIGHT installed highly insulating opal triple glazing with a U-value of 0.7 W/(m²K).
A special surface treatment of the panes achieves a soft, homogeneous light diffusion. This provides the interior with pleasant daylight—without harsh shadows or the risk of glare. At the same time, the opal glazing also serves as effective privacy protection from the outside, which can play a central role, particularly in areas with sensitive use—such as research or product development. The result is a light-filled yet shielded work environment that perfectly combines discretion and openness.
This historic industrial building is state-of-the-art not only in terms of energy efficiency but also in terms of safety. As part of the renovation, a complete ventilation and fire protection system from INDU LIGHT was integrated. Nine Draco ventilation louvers ensure a supply of fresh air at the push of a button and simultaneously serve as natural smoke and heat exhaust devices in the continuous rooflight. Two Libra-type skylight domes provide the stairwells with light and air and ensure smoke-free escape and rescue routes in the event of a fire.
Thanks to the comprehensive renovation of the building envelope, combined with a modern heat pump, the use of geothermal energy, and the installation of a photovoltaic system, the historic building meets the Efficiency House 55EE standard. The result: a high degree of energy self-sufficiency and reduced operating costs in a building dating from 1924. More daylight, less energy consumption!
