Trier Gallerie
Shopping as if under the open sky
The spacious glass roof of the Trier Galerie is part of the overall concept: shopping in all kinds of weather while still being fully protected. When the shopping mall was built in 2008, the architects focused on natural light. A decade and a half after opening, the roof, which had begun to leak, needed to be renovated. With the “Glasline” modular system, shopping is once again an experience.

INDU LIGHT sets accents
In many cases, shopping malls are self-contained worlds with no connection to the city or the surrounding landscape. Until the 1960s, it was common practice to forego natural light in shopping centers. The buildings and their stores were mostly windowless in order to maximize the floor space available for displaying merchandise. Clothing, food, and household appliances were effectively illuminated through the strategic use of artificial lighting. It wasn’t until the 1980s that people began to rediscover the virtues and qualities of the great models from Milan or Paris: the flagship store of “Galeries Lafayette” and the world’s oldest shopping arcade, “Galleria Vittorio Emanuele,” impressed with their imposing glass domes and glass roofs. The shopping arcade becomes part of the city once again. Daylight is welcome once more. When walls are needed for shelves, a glass roof is the only way to bring natural light into the space. At the same time, it is the most atmospheric way for light to enter. The world’s most famous shopping arcades prove this and serve as a model for the Trier Galerie.
Trier's largest shopping mall
The shopping center is seamlessly integrated into the urban fabric of the city’s historic center. With 15,000 square meters of retail space, the Trier Galerie offers a great mix of shopping and dining, featuring over 70 specialty stores and numerous restaurants and cafés. Cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, and fashion shows attract five million visitors annually. The Trier Galerie spans three floors. All stores face the center and open up to the light. This creates an urban extension of the city within the interior. “Galerie” is meant literally here. Everything revolves around seeing and being seen. Exhibitions take place on the ground floor, while the two upper floors, with views across all levels, offer excellent conditions for shoppers and retailers alike. The spacious glass roof literally draws visitors upward and rewards them with an unobstructed view of the sky.
renovation
The renovation of the folded glass roof, with its complex geometry, presents a unique challenge. With INDU LIGHT’s newly developed “Glasline” mullion-transom profile system, gable roofs, shed roofs, and monopitch roofs can be realized, as can custom roof shapes. Thanks to unlimited span widths and continuously adjustable pitch angles, this versatile glass system is particularly well-suited for retrofitting existing structures, such as the Trier Galerie. For the renovation, INDU LIGHT provides all services from the initial assessment and planning through to detailed drawings and installation. Following an expert assessment and identification of all weak points, INDU LIGHT develops a customised solution with special consideration for requirements related to building physics, structural engineering, fire protection, sound insulation, and energy efficiency. This includes condensation formation in the rebate and its drainage, as well as temperature differences and the resulting thermal expansion.
A key requirement for the renovation of the Trier Galerie is that business operations must not be disrupted by the work. The INDU LIGHT team achieves this through a well-organized construction process, as well as precise planning and installation. During the construction phase, an eleven-meter-wide platform is built, which is moved forward as work progresses. Under a tent spanning the entire building, a moving crane lifts out the glass panels and re-installs them into the new “Glasline” profile system. This careful and resource-efficient reuse of reusable elements is a current example of the new concept of “urban mining.” It demonstrates how circular planning and construction can already work today. What applies to the glass panels applies to the “Glasline” system from INDU LIGHT as a whole: At the end of its life cycle, the system can be almost completely recycled and reused.
Good quality pays off
In collaboration with RWK Architektur, INDU LIGHT is implementing a customised solution for the Trier Galerie—a challenging construction project where standard solutions fall short. Slim extruded aluminum profiles, ranging from 50 mm to 60 mm in width, ensure maximum elegance and transparency. The clean design language and high-quality craftsmanship extend down to the finest details. Particularly noteworthy from the interior view: no visible screws, discreetly integrated drives for ventilation sashes, and flush mullion-transom profiles. Support profiles equipped with continuous seals ensure controlled drainage and glass rebate ventilation. Thanks to the insulating centering strip, the continuous seals, and custom-made glass rebate insulation, this system successfully reduces heat loss and meets Passive House standards. Following the renovation, the Trier Galerie once again delights visitors as the city’s most beautiful shopping arcade. Flooded with natural light, it now offers atmospheric shopping experiences year-round, just like under the open sky.
